July 20th–the 9th Sunday after Pentecost

Dear St. Stephen’s church family,

Greetings in Christ!

I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself. -Psalm 89:1-2

The Rev. Perry and Andrea spent the past week at Camp Okema, along with others. This coming week is Junior Teen, and several more of our parish family will be attending. Please keep them all in your prayers, especially with the hot weather forecasted (thank you God, for the lake!). Here’s a few photos Perry sent me.

Church School continues throughout July, with the theme: “Mission God Possible!” The Bible lessons will be taught through escape room type activities. Each week children will learn about a biblical hero. Here are some photos of the children at work!

Next Sunday, July 28th, we will hold a Parish Picnic after the 10:30 am service. If it’s too hot to be outside, we’ll picnic downstairs for lunch and fellowship. It will be a potluck salad lunch, so if you are able, please bring a salad to share. We’ll provide hot dogs, drinks and ice cream. If you are able to help serve or clean up, please sign up! Donations for the lunch will go towards supporting St. Stephen’s kids and youth to go to camp this summer.

Don’t forget that throughout August inclusively, we will be holding only one morning service, at 9:30 am. There will not be church school during August, but children are always welcome to come and be in the service upstairs. We are all a part of the family of God.

Our Book Study–Faith like a Child–continues this week, Thursday, July 25th, at 1:30, with chapter 6. We will take a 2 week break (no book study August 1 or August 8) and meet again on August 15th.

Our Thursday BCP service continues at 4:30 pm.
Tuesday Evening Prayer on the Lawn, Tuesdays, 7 pm.
Our Roof project is finally completed! Heat tape was professionally installed, along with new electrical sockets, by Tall Electric. The work took the better part of Thursday. Thank you to all who contributed to this work being done and to all who support St. Stephen’s with time, talent and treasure. We may not notice the work itself, but we will notice the proper draining and melting of accumulated snow in winter, and rejoice!
He spreads the snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes.
-Psalm 147:16
I was over at Preston Park 2 this past week, leading a service. St. Stephen’s leads 2 services a month at Preston Avenue Special Care home (previously Extendicare) and additional services at Preston Park and other homes, as possible and requested. It is one of the ways we reach out into the community. We have been asked if we can provide 6 (or more?) volunteers for a summer Carnival at Samaritan Place (long term care home) on Friday, August 16th, from 2-4. Activities include Shoot the Duck (with water guns!), Axe throwing (I’m sure it’s not exactly as it sounds!) and the concession. Our job would be to support and enjoy the residents, helping to facilitate whatever activity they assign to us. I would usually go to the Youth Group to enlist help with this, but many are away (at camp!) or working. So I am putting this out to the wider church community! Are you able to help out with this? Please let me know as soon as you can. I think it would be fun to do this together, and another great way to live out our vision.

Finally, I plan to attend a service tomorrow–Sunday, July 21st, at 2 pm, at Queen’s House. Holy Covenant Evangelical Orthodox church in Saskatoon (priest, Jakob Palm) is meeting with C3, another congregation in town (the pastor is Clayton B’s neighbour!) for Eucharist, and they extended an invitation to us to join them.  All are invited. There may be ice cream and coffee afterwards! I think* the building is air conditioned. As you probably know, Queen’s House has been sold and will no longer be available for retreats and community events. This is most likely the last time I will go there in its capacity as a house of retreat and worship. I look forward to gathering with these different denominations to pray and worship together. Please join me if you are able!

In faith, hope and love.
In Christ,

Rev. Amy <><
